âWhat happened with the police today?â Jockey Mike asked Neil. His boss was gone for much of the day.
Neil glanced to the right to his driver and, upon thought, friend. For all his business savvy, social skills and networking, Neil occasionally thought about the fact that he had few people he could truly call friends. He didnât have many people he could call up who would be willing to go out for a drink, maybe a meal, catch a ball game or just hang out. There was no family to speak of. There were only the people who were useful in some way that he needed to operate his part of the overall machine for White and Felix and that was pretty much it in his life. He had few people to confide in. T.O. was one, but he was gone now. Reality was, Jockey Mike was about all he had. Jockey Mike was always there at his side, at his beck and call. Maybe you should treat him a little better, Neil thought to himself. In any event, he was in the mood to talk and Mike was ready to engage. âThey asked a lot of questions. I didnât give them many answers. For the most part the detectives ended up frustrated, especially because when they raided the house up in Rogers there was nothing there.â
âSo White and Felix must know you were hauled in then, right?â
Neil nodded. âYes. In fact, theyâd been expecting it.â
âWere they okay after it was all over?â
âYes.â Neil nodded and then thought for a moment. âI guess they seemed to be.â
The two of them sat in silence for a bit, taking in the pre-season football game on the corner flat screen of the sparsely populated tavern.
âI know the cops have been watching the shop. I assume thatâs why weâve just been staying there all the time.â
âYeah, thatâs right. Are you getting bored, Mike?â
âI donât know,â the little man replied. âSomewhat, I guess. I mean, all I do is sit around and wait for you to need to go somewhere. If youâre not going anywhere, I donât have much to do but sit around the shop and read stuff.â
âMe too. I feel cooped up.â
âDid all of this have something to do with that guy, the ex-cop who was watching us that night?â
âYes, thatâs a big part of it. I think thatâs why the police have been watching the shop again, so there is that.â
âIt seemed like they were watching, then they werenât and now theyâre back again. I mean, I think they are. I do what you tell me, I keep my eyes open and each day I seem to be able to find the cops who are on watch. They change up their cars or trucks or SUVs, but I seem to be able to pick them out. But why is it they seemed to stop and now theyâre back again? Thatâs what I canât figure.â
Neil nodded as he reached into the popcorn basket for a handful of popcorn.
